Natural, premium or Russian lips: which suits you?
Most people arrive with a photo of lips they like. We start with your own lips instead: their height, width and border, and the balance between top and bottom. Then we recommend one of three approaches.
Classic lip filler
Soft volume through the body of the lip and a crisper border. It suits first-timers and anyone who wants their own lips, only fuller. £190 for 0.5 ml or 1 ml.
Lip augmentation
The same natural approach using a premium hyaluronic acid filler. We explain the difference at consultation and only recommend it when it suits your lips. £220.
Russian lips
Filler is placed to lift the lips upwards and shape a heart-like Cupid’s bow, so they look taller from the front but stay fairly flat from the side. It suits lips with some natural height. £220.
Shape before size
A defined border, an even top-to-bottom balance and a slight lift often do more than extra volume. We keep a first treatment soft: you can always add later, but overfilled lips need dissolving to undo.
Is lip filler right for you?
Most healthy adults can have lip filler. A few things need a conversation first, and some mean waiting or choosing a different route.
Often suitable for
Adults aged 18 or over with naturally thin lips, lips that have lost volume with age, an uneven top and bottom lip, a flat Cupid’s bow or a faded border. Also returning clients whose previous filler has worn off.
Talk to us before booking if
You get cold sores: we may suggest asking your GP or pharmacist about antiviral treatment first. Also tell us if you take blood thinners, have an autoimmune condition, or have permanent or previous lip filler.
When we suggest something else
Anyone under 18, or an active cold sore or infection on the lips. We postpone treatment during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Filler that has spread above the lip line is dissolved before we add more, and we say no when the size you want would look overfilled.
What happens at your lip filler appointment
Your visit starts with a proper consultation. Nothing is injected until you have seen the plan, agreed the price and are happy to go ahead.
Talk and look
About 45 minutes for the consultation: your medical history, including cold sores, what you like and dislike about your lips, and photos from the front and side. We agree the style, amount and price before anything else.
Numb the lips
Topical numbing cream goes on first and is left to work. Many lip fillers also contain a local anaesthetic, which helps as the treatment goes on.
Shape in stages
Small amounts go into the border and the body of the lip, a little at a time. You check the shape in a mirror before we finish, and we aim for lips that still look like yours.
Review at two weeks
Once the swelling has gone, we compare your before and after photos together. If anything needs a small adjustment, we talk it through then.
Lip filler swelling, aftercare and how long it lasts
Lips swell more than any other filler area, so do not judge the result on day one. This is what a typical first fortnight looks like.
Days 1 to 3: peak swelling
Swelling is usually worst in the first one to three days and mostly settled within a week. Lips can feel firm or slightly uneven at first, and any bruising can take about a week to fade.
First 24 to 48 hours
No straws, kissing or hot drinks for the first 24 hours, and keep make-up and lip products off for the rest of the day. Avoid strenuous exercise, heat such as saunas, steam rooms and hot yoga, and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours.
First two weeks: no pressure
Avoid facials, massage and firm pressure on the lips for two weeks, and leave dental treatment until after then if you can. Sunbeds and strong sun can also make swelling worse.
Two weeks: the real result
By your review the filler has settled and softened. This is the shape to judge, and the point to raise anything you are unsure about.
How long lip filler lasts
Usually 6 to 12 months. Lips move all day, so filler here breaks down faster than in the cheeks or chin, and a first treatment can fade sooner.
Top-ups without overfilling
Many clients top up every 6 to 12 months with a smaller amount. Adding more before old filler has gone is how lips end up puffy, so we check what is still there first.
Safety first. Lips have a rich blood supply, so bruising is common and, rarely, filler can block a blood vessel here. Lip injections can also set off a cold sore if you are prone to them, so tell us at your consultation. Contact us straight away about pain that gets worse, skin that turns white, blotchy, grey or blue-purple, or an area that feels cold. Any change in your vision: call 999 or go to A&E. How we keep filler safe
Treatments that balance a lip result
Many faces look more balanced when one area is planned alongside another. These are the treatments clients most often consider alongside this one.
Cheek filler
Lips can look out of proportion when the cheeks are flat, and restoring cheek support sometimes means the lips need less.
Cheek filler in DoncasterChin filler
A short or set-back chin makes even modest lips look prominent from the side, so a little chin projection can balance the profile.
Chin filler in DoncasterFiller dissolving
If old lip filler has migrated or looks overdone, dissolving it first gives the cleanest base for new filler.

How much does lip filler cost?
At Dermacy Clinic, lip filler is £190 for 0.5 ml or 1 ml, the same price either way. Lip augmentation with a premium filler is £220 for 1 ml, and Russian lips is £220. Your price is agreed at the consultation, before anything is injected. Medicred patient finance is available, subject to approval.
How long does lip filler last?
Usually 6 to 12 months. Lips are one of the most mobile parts of the face, so filler here breaks down faster than in the cheeks or chin. Metabolism, smoking, sun exposure and a lot of intense exercise can shorten it. As filler fades, your lips return gradually towards their natural shape rather than dropping suddenly.
How much lip filler should I get for the first time?
Many first-timers start with 0.5 ml for a subtle change, and others choose 1 ml for a more noticeable one. Both are £190. One ml is about a fifth of a teaspoon, so even 1 ml spread across both lips usually looks soft rather than dramatic. We talk through how full you want to go before we start. Building up later is easy; taking filler away means dissolving.
Is lip filler painful?
Lips are sensitive, so expect some discomfort, but most people find it manageable. We apply topical numbing cream first, and many lip fillers contain a local anaesthetic that numbs the area further as we go. You may feel pressure, and a sting at the border, which is the most sensitive part. Lips can feel tender and tight for a day or two afterwards.
How long does lip filler swelling last?
Swelling is usually worst in the first one to three days, when lips can look bigger, firmer and a little uneven. It is mostly settled within a week, and the final shape shows at about two weeks, when we see you for your review. A cold compress wrapped in a clean cloth, held on gently, can help. Avoid booking within two weeks of a wedding or big event.
Can I kiss or use a straw after lip filler?
Not for the first 24 hours. Pressure and suction from kissing, straws, smoking or vaping can move fresh filler and add to swelling. Avoid hot drinks on the first day, and keep make-up and lip products off for the rest of the day. Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours. Avoid facials, massage and firm pressure on the lips for two weeks.
Can I get lip filler if I get cold sores?
Usually yes, but tell us at your consultation. Lip injections can trigger a cold sore in people who carry the virus, so we may advise you to speak to your GP or pharmacist about antiviral treatment before your appointment. We never treat lips with an active cold sore, or one that is just starting to tingle. We move your appointment until it has fully healed.
What is lip filler migration?
Migration is when filler moves away from where it was placed, most often above the border of the upper lip. It can leave a puffy ridge, sometimes called a filler moustache, or a blurred lip line. It is linked to too much filler, filler placed too often and top-ups before old filler has gone. We build lips gradually and check what is already there. If filler has migrated, we usually dissolve it and start again.
Russian lips vs classic lip filler: what is the difference?
Classic lip filler adds volume and projection, so lips look fuller from the front and from the side. Russian lips is a technique that lifts the lips vertically and shapes the Cupid’s bow, giving a taller, heart-shaped look while the profile stays fairly flat. It suits lips with some natural height and shape. If you already have filler, we may need to dissolve it first so the new shape sits cleanly.
Is lip filler permanent?
No. Hyaluronic acid filler is broken down by your body over time, which is why lip results usually last 6 to 12 months. We use hyaluronic acid fillers from Juvéderm, Stylage and Fillmed, and they can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if something needs correcting. If you have ever had permanent lip filler, tell us, because it changes what we can safely do.
Is lip filler safe?
Lip filler is one of the most common aesthetic treatments, and for most healthy adults the side effects are short-lived. Swelling, tenderness and bruising are expected. Less common problems include lumps, infection and cold sores, and, rarely, filler blocking a blood vessel, which needs urgent treatment. We go through your medical history before treating and explain the warning signs to look out for before you leave.
Can lip filler be dissolved?
Yes. Because we use hyaluronic acid filler, it can be broken down with hyaluronidase if lips look uneven, lumpy or overfilled. Dissolving existing filler costs £150 per ml, and an allergy patch test is required first. We also treat lip filler placed at other clinics after an assessment. We usually wait about two weeks before adding any new filler.
How old do you have to be to get lip filler?
You must be 18 or over. Cosmetic filler for anyone under 18 is illegal in England under the Botulinum Toxin and Cosmetic Fillers (Children) Act 2021. Above 18, the right time is when you have a clear reason, such as thin lips, uneven sides or volume lost with age, rather than a particular birthday.
Is lip filler worth it?
For many people who want fuller or more defined lips without surgery, it is: you see a change straight away, downtime is short and hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if you change your mind. It is less worth it if you want a size your lips cannot carry without looking overfilled, or if the real issue is a set-back chin. We will tell you honestly at your consultation.
Which filler brands do you use?
We use hyaluronic acid fillers from Juvéderm, Stylage and Fillmed, all of which can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if ever needed. For lips we choose from lip-specific gels such as Juvéderm Volbella, Stylage Special Lips and Fillmed ART FILLER Lips. The exact product is chosen for your face at consultation.
