Can filler be dissolved?
Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, an enzyme injected into the filler that breaks it down, usually within 24 to 48 hours. At Dermacy Clinic, filler dissolving in Doncaster is £150 per ml. Every client has a face-to-face assessment and a required allergy patch test first. Permanent and non-hyaluronic acid fillers cannot be dissolved this way.

Reasons people have filler dissolved
Dissolving is often the first step back to a natural shape, or the clean start that new filler needs. These are the common reasons to consider it.
Filler that has moved
Lip filler that has spread above the border, or filler that has drifted from the cheeks, can blur your natural lines. Dissolving clears it so the area can be judged again.
Lumps, unevenness or a blue tint
Firm bumps that have not softened, one side fuller than the other, or a blue-grey shadow under the eyes, known as the Tyndall effect. If the cause is hyaluronic acid filler, hyaluronidase can break it down.
A result that is not you
Years of top-ups can leave lips, cheeks or under-eyes puffy and heavy, and some results simply never looked right. We assess filler placed at other clinics as well as our own.
Dissolve, then rebuild
Old filler can get in the way of a new shape, for example before Russian lips. Clearing it first, then waiting for the area to settle, gives new filler a clean base.
Who can have filler dissolved?
Adults with hyaluronic acid filler they want reduced or removed can be assessed. Every client has a required allergy patch test before treatment, and the more we know about what was injected, the better we can plan.
Often suitable for
Adults with hyaluronic acid filler that has migrated, formed lumps, looks overfilled or uneven, shows a blue tint under the eyes, or no longer suits them. Filler from Dermacy or from another clinic.
Talk to us before booking if
You do not know what filler you had: bring any records or the clinic’s details. Also tell us if your filler is only a few weeks old, you take blood thinners, or you have reacted to hyaluronidase or a bee or wasp sting.
When we suggest something else
Permanent or non-hyaluronic acid fillers, which hyaluronidase cannot break down. We only treat people aged 18 or over, and we postpone treatment during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Warning signs after recent filler, such as skin turning pale or dusky, are urgent. Contact the clinic that treated you; if you cannot reach them, call NHS 111 or go to A&E.
How hyaluronidase dissolving works
Dissolving is a medical treatment in its own right, so it follows a clear order: assessment, a required patch test, then treatment.
Find out what is there
We ask when and where the filler was placed and which product, if you know. We look at and feel the area, take photos and go through your medical history and allergies. Then we agree how much to dissolve at £150 per ml.
Allergy patch test
Every client has an allergy patch test before dissolving. A tiny amount of hyaluronidase is placed in the skin and checked for a reaction. We explain how long it takes and when treatment can go ahead.
Dissolve
Hyaluronidase is injected in small amounts into the filler itself, and we only treat the areas we agreed. Expect a short sting with each injection.
Settle, then decide
Give the area time to settle. Once the swelling has gone, you can see what is left. If you want a further treatment or new filler, contact us and we will plan it with you.
After dissolving: swelling, aftercare and re-filling
The filler breaks down quickly, but the area takes a little longer to look settled. Here is what to expect in the days and weeks afterwards.
First 48 hours
Swelling, redness and tenderness are common, and the area can look bigger before it looks smaller. Bruising is possible, especially in the lips.
Within a few days
Most of the targeted filler has broken down and the shape underneath starts to show as the swelling eases.
Your own hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronidase can also break down a little of the hyaluronic acid your skin makes naturally, so the area may look slightly flatter for a short while. Your body usually replaces it over the following weeks.
Aftercare
Avoid strenuous exercise, heat such as saunas, steam rooms and hot yoga, and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours. Keep make-up off the treated area for the rest of the day, and avoid facials, massage and firm pressure on it for two weeks.
Re-filling
We usually wait around two weeks before adding new filler, so the swelling has gone and we can see what remains. We plan it with you once the area has settled.
More than one treatment
Dense, older or layered filler sometimes needs more than one treatment. Dissolving is £150 per ml, and we agree the amount with you before we start.
Safety first. Hyaluronidase is also the medicine used when filler blocks a blood vessel, but that is an emergency, not a booked dissolving appointment. Allergic reactions to hyaluronidase are uncommon, so tell us about every allergy, including to bee or wasp stings. Contact us straight away about pain that gets worse, skin that turns white, blotchy, grey or blue-purple, or an area that feels cold. Any change in your vision: call 999 or go to A&E. How we keep filler safe
After dissolving: rebuilding the area
Many faces look more balanced when one area is planned alongside another. These are the treatments clients most often consider alongside this one.
Lip filler
Once old lip filler has gone, a small, well-placed amount can give a softer, more natural shape than years of top-ups.

If under-eye filler has been dissolved, a smaller amount placed with care may still soften hollows once the area has settled.
Tear trough filler in DoncasterCheek filler
Cheek filler that has spread can make the face look wide; after dissolving, restoring support with less filler can look more natural.

How much does it cost to dissolve filler?
Dissolving existing filler at Dermacy Clinic in Doncaster is £150 per ml. A face-to-face assessment and a required allergy patch test come first. The amount depends on how much filler needs breaking down, and we agree it with you before we start. Dense, older or layered filler can need more than one treatment. New filler afterwards is priced separately.
What is hyaluronidase?
Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. Your body makes its own, and the medical form has been used for decades, for example to help fluids injected under the skin to spread and absorb. In aesthetics it is injected into hyaluronic acid filler to break it into pieces your body can clear. In the UK it is a prescription-only medicine.
How long does hyaluronidase take to work?
It starts working quickly, and most of the breakdown usually happens within 24 to 48 hours. Swelling from the injections can make the area look fuller at first, so the true result shows once that settles, usually within a few days.
Does dissolving filler hurt?
Most people feel a sharp sting for a few seconds as each injection goes in. The area can ache or feel tender for a day or two afterwards. The treatment itself is quick, and lips are usually the most sensitive area to dissolve.
Do I need a patch test before filler dissolving?
Yes. Every client has an allergy patch test before dissolving, without exception. A tiny amount of hyaluronidase is placed in the skin and checked for a reaction, because a small number of people are allergic to it. If you have reacted to hyaluronidase before, or had a strong reaction to a bee or wasp sting, tell us when you book.
How long does swelling last after dissolving filler?
Swelling, redness and tenderness are usually worst in the first 24 to 48 hours and settle over a few days. Lips can look puffy for a day or two, and any bruising can take about a week to fade. Avoid strenuous exercise, heat and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours to help it settle.
Does dissolving filler get rid of it all?
Often most of it, but not always in one go. Hyaluronidase works on the filler it is injected into, and older or dense filler can need a further treatment. Traces can also sit deeper than expected. If some remains once the area has settled, contact us and we can plan the next step together.
Does dissolving filler ruin your face?
For most people, no. Hyaluronidase can break down a little of your own hyaluronic acid, so the area may look slightly flatter for a while. Your body usually replaces it over the following weeks. If filler has stretched the tissue over many years, the area can look a little different once it has gone. We talk this through at your assessment.
How long after dissolving filler can I get more filler?
Usually around two weeks. That gives the swelling time to settle and lets us see what filler, if any, is left. Some situations call for a longer wait, and we will tell you if so. Adding filler to an area that is still swollen makes the result much harder to judge.
Can you dissolve filler from another clinic?
Yes, after an assessment. We need to know as much as possible about what was injected, so bring the clinic’s name, the product and the dates if you have them. If we cannot be confident it is hyaluronic acid filler, or it may be permanent, we will tell you that dissolving may not work and explain what else could help.
Can hyaluronidase dissolve all types of filler?
No. It only works on hyaluronic acid fillers. Permanent fillers such as silicone, and non-hyaluronic acid fillers such as calcium hydroxylapatite or poly-L-lactic acid, are not affected by it. These need a different approach, sometimes a surgeon’s opinion. It is one reason we only use hyaluronic acid filler at Dermacy Clinic.
Can you dissolve lip filler naturally or at home?
There is no safe way to dissolve filler at home. Hyaluronic acid filler breaks down on its own over months, and lip filler usually fades within 6 to 12 months, though traces can remain for longer. Massage, heat and products sold online will not dissolve it, and injecting anything bought online is dangerous. If you want it gone sooner, hyaluronidase from a trained practitioner is the proper route.
Is hyaluronidase used in filler emergencies?
Yes. When filler blocks a blood vessel, hyaluronidase is the usual first treatment and is given urgently. That is a separate medical situation from a planned dissolving appointment. If you notice worsening pain, skin turning white, grey or blue-purple, or an area that feels cold after filler, contact the clinic that treated you at once. If you cannot reach them, call NHS 111 or go to A&E. Any change in your eyesight needs 999 or A&E.
Who should not have filler dissolved?
We only treat people aged 18 or over, and we postpone treatment during pregnancy and breastfeeding. We take extra care, or may advise against treatment, if you have had an allergic reaction to hyaluronidase, a severe reaction to a bee or wasp sting, or an active infection in the area. Tell us about every medicine and allergy at your assessment.
Which fillers can be dissolved?
Hyaluronic acid fillers, including the Juvéderm, Stylage and Fillmed ranges we use, can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Older permanent or non-hyaluronic fillers cannot be dissolved this way, so tell us what you had and when at your assessment.
