Does tear trough filler get rid of dark circles?
Tear trough filler helps when the dark circle is really a shadow cast by a hollow under the eye. Filling the hollow softens that shadow, so you look less tired. It does not lighten brown pigment, shrink puffy bags or tighten loose skin, and it can make puffiness worse. At Dermacy Clinic in Doncaster we check which one you have first. Tear trough filler costs £260.

Is it a hollow, a bag or pigment?
Three different things can make under-eyes look dark or tired. Only one of them is a lack of volume, and that is the only one filler treats.
A hollow that casts a shadow
A groove runs from the inner corner of the eye towards the cheek. As it deepens, light catches its upper edge and leaves a shadow below. Softening the groove with a little filler lifts that shadow.
Puffy bags or loose skin
Bags caused by fluid or by fat pushing forward are not a lack of volume, and filler can hold water and make them look bigger. Loose, crepey skin needs a different approach, sometimes an eyelid surgeon's opinion.
Brown pigment
Colour in the skin itself stays the same after filler. Our skin analysis consultation (£30, free with any treatment) shows whether pigment is the cause and which skin treatments may help.
Cheeks before under-eyes
When the cheek has flattened, the under-eye hollow often looks deeper than it really is. Restoring a little cheek support can soften the tear trough without placing filler right under the eye.
Who tear trough filler suits
Under-eyes are one of the areas where we most often say no, or suggest something else first. That honesty is part of the treatment.
Often suitable for
Adults with a visible hollow or groove under the eye, a shadow that makes them look tired even after a good night's sleep, reasonably firm skin and little puffiness. Hollows that run in the family often respond well.
Talk to us before booking if
You have had filler under the eyes before, especially if it looked puffy or moved. You take blood thinners or bruise easily, have thyroid eye problems, have had eye or eyelid surgery, or have any infection or irritation around the eyes.
When we suggest something else
Puffy bags, swelling that comes and goes, a lot of loose or crepey skin, or dark circles that are mainly pigment. We never treat under-18s, and we postpone treatment during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
What happens at your tear trough appointment
A careful visit, with time to talk properly before anything is injected.
Look and listen
We look at your under-eyes in good light, from the front and at an angle, and ask what bothers you most. We go through your medical history, your medicines and any filler you have had before.
An honest plan and price
If filler suits you, we explain where it will go, roughly how much you need and the risks for this area. If it does not, we say so and suggest what may help instead. Nothing is injected until you agree.
Numbing and treatment
Numbing cream goes on first. Filler is placed slowly and in small amounts, and we stop to check the result as we go. Many people need less than they expect.
Review at two weeks
Under-eyes take time to settle. At your review we check the result in the same light. If a small top-up would help we discuss it, and if anything looks puffy or bluish we talk through dissolving.
Results, swelling and aftercare
Under-eyes settle more slowly than lips or cheeks. Knowing what to expect makes the first two weeks much easier.
The first few days
You will usually see a softer hollow straight away, along with some swelling and possibly bruising. The two sides can look slightly different at first while the swelling settles.
Weeks one and two
Most swelling and bruising fades within one to two weeks. Some people notice mild puffiness for longer, often in the morning or after a salty meal or alcohol. Tell us if it does not settle.
How long it lasts
Under-eye filler often lasts 9 to 12 months, and for some people longer, because the area moves less than the mouth. It fades gradually, so there is no sudden drop.
Aftercare to do
Sleep with your head slightly raised for the first night or two. A cool compress wrapped in a clean cloth helps with swelling. Keep the area clean and follow your written aftercare.
Aftercare to avoid
Avoid strenuous exercise, heat such as saunas, steam rooms and hot yoga, and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours. Keep make-up off the treated area for the rest of the day. Avoid rubbing your eyes, facials, massage and firm pressure on the area for two weeks.
Top-ups
When it fades, a smaller top-up is often enough. We would rather add a little later than put too much in at once, because extra filler under the eyes tends to look puffy.
Safety first. The skin under the eyes is thin and the area has many small blood vessels, so bruising is common and a blocked vessel, though rare, is serious. Filler sitting too close to the surface can give a bluish tint (the Tyndall effect), which can usually be corrected by dissolving it with hyaluronidase. Contact us straight away about pain that gets worse, skin that turns white, blotchy, grey or blue-purple, or an area that feels cold. Any change in your vision: call 999 or go to A&E. Treatments to consider with tear trough filler
Many faces look more balanced when one area is planned alongside another. These are the treatments clients most often consider alongside this one.
Cheek filler
If your cheeks have flattened, restoring cheek support can soften an under-eye hollow and is sometimes the safer first step.

Puffiness, lumps or a bluish tint from old under-eye filler can usually be corrected by dissolving it.

Straight answers about comfort, results, prices and aftercare.
How much does tear trough filler cost?
At Dermacy Clinic in Doncaster, tear trough filler is £260, agreed at consultation before anything is injected. UK prices vary widely, so when you compare clinics, check what is included and who reviews you afterwards. Patient finance through Medicred is available, subject to approval.
Does tear trough filler help with eye bags?
Usually not. Bags are caused by fluid, or by fat pushing forward under the lower lid. They are not a lack of volume, and filler can hold water and make them look bigger. Filler suits a hollow below the eye, not a bulge. If your main concern is bags or loose skin, we will tell you and may suggest skin treatments or an eyelid surgeon's opinion.
How long does tear trough filler last?
Often 9 to 12 months, and sometimes longer. The under-eye area moves less than the lips, so filler tends to break down slowly here. How long yours lasts depends on your metabolism, the amount used and your skin. Results fade gradually, and a top-up is usually smaller than the first treatment.
Does tear trough filler hurt?
Most people describe pressure and an odd sensation rather than sharp pain. We apply numbing cream first and work slowly. You may feel a little stinging at the injection points. If you are nervous about treatment so close to your eyes, tell us at consultation and we will talk you through each step before we start.
How long does tear trough filler swelling last?
Most swelling and bruising settles within one to two weeks, but under-eyes can stay puffy longer than other areas. Some people notice mild swelling on and off for a few weeks, especially in the morning. Sleeping slightly propped up and cutting back on salt and alcohol early on can help. Swelling that keeps coming back is something we want to see.
How long does tear trough filler take to settle?
Plan on about two weeks. You see a difference straight away, but swelling can make the area look fuller or uneven at first. That is why your review is booked at two weeks, when we judge the settled result rather than the first few days. Avoid booking treatment within two weeks of a wedding or big event.
What should I avoid after tear trough filler?
For 24 to 48 hours, skip strenuous exercise, heat such as saunas, steam rooms and hot yoga, and alcohol. Keep make-up off the treated area for the rest of the day. For two weeks, avoid facials, massage and firm pressure around your eyes. If you take medicines that thin the blood, tell us before treatment, but never stop a prescribed medicine without your doctor's advice.
Can tear trough filler migrate?
Filler can spread beyond where it was placed or sit in the wrong layer, and under-eye filler that has moved is a common reason people look for help. It is more likely when too much is used or it is placed too shallow. We use small amounts and review you at two weeks. Filler that has moved can usually be dissolved.
What is the Tyndall effect?
It is a bluish tint that can appear when hyaluronic acid filler sits too close to the surface under thin skin. Light scatters through the gel and shows as a blue-grey patch. It is one reason the under-eye area needs extra care. If it happens, it can usually be corrected by dissolving the filler with hyaluronidase.
Can tear trough filler be dissolved?
Yes. We only use hyaluronic acid filler, which can be broken down with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. That matters under the eyes, where puffiness, lumps or a bluish tint sometimes need correcting. Dissolving existing filler is £150 at Dermacy Clinic, and we assess the area before recommending it.
Can tear trough filler make you blind?
Sight loss after facial filler is very rare, but it has been reported, which is why the under-eye area is treated as a higher-skill area. It can happen if filler enters a blood vessel. A careful assessment, small amounts and slow placement reduce the risk. Any change in your vision after filler is an emergency: call 999 or go to A&E.
Is tear trough filler worth it?
For the right person, many find it worthwhile: a clear hollow, a shadow that makes them look tired, reasonably firm skin and little puffiness. For puffy bags, loose skin or pigment it is not worth paying for, because it will not fix the cause. That is why the consultation comes first and why we are happy to say no.
How much tear trough filler do I need?
Usually less than people expect. The under-eye area needs small amounts, and too much tends to look puffy rather than fresher. We would rather place a conservative amount and review at two weeks than overfill. Sometimes the better answer is to support the cheeks first, which we will explain at consultation.
How old do you have to be for tear trough filler?
You must be 18 or over. Filler for under-18s is illegal in England under the Botulinum Toxin and Cosmetic Fillers (Children) Act 2021, and we never treat anyone under 18. Some adults in their twenties have under-eye hollows that run in the family and may be suitable after an assessment.
Which filler brands do you use?
We use hyaluronic acid fillers from Juvéderm, Stylage and Fillmed, all of which can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if ever needed. Under the eyes we use a soft, smooth gel suited to thin skin, chosen at consultation. The exact product is chosen for your face at consultation.
